The company that advertises itself as the "Spirit of Australia" has turned on its own customers, causing untold suffering and stress to thousands of travellers around the world. Tonight John Bursill returns to TNRA  to report on the unfolding disaster at Qantas, which has grounded its entire fleet in a reprisal against industrial action.

The grounding of the Qantas fleet was done with no warning to passengers, which makes this action far more disruptive than a strike which would require the union to give 72 hours notice.

The image of Qantas is further tarnished by the fact that the CEO of Qantas received a 71% pay rise before the fleet was grounded.

The Spirit of Australia

A summary of the current situation is provided by ABC News:

  • Industrial action by three unions, representing engineers, baggage and catering staff and long-haul pilots, has been ongoing for several months over pay and conditions.

  • Qantas says that the strike action had until Saturday resulted in 70,000 passengers being affected, more than 600 flights cancelled and seven aircraft grounded.

  • More than 68,000 customers affected since grounding at 5pm (AEDT) Saturday. About 447 flights have been cancelled.

  • The fleet grounding will impact 108 planes at 22 airports, domestically and internationally.

  • Jetstar flights, QantasLink flights and Qantas flights across the Tasman operated by Jetconnect will continue. Jetstar capacity is very limited.

Categories: [ John Bursill, Qantas dispute ]

John BursillTonight aircraft engineer John Bursill returns to the show to bring us an update on the ongoing dispute between Qantas ground crews and the corporatocracy which wants to outsource safety checks to overseas facilities.

It should be noted that John Bursill does not speak as a representative of Qantas.

Qantas has determined that the plan to outsource vital maintenance procedures is international "best practice" - an odd twist of language when you consider the fact that these changes will decrease the amount of oversight given to the highly qualified and dedicated Australian crews, delegating these responsibilities to contractors working in another country for whom a given airplane is just a hunk of metal.

It turns out that the "best practices" which Qantas intends to follow also affect the bottom line. In effect these are cost cutting measures, dressed up to appear like improvements in efficiency.

The peculiarities of the dispute are outlined in a recent article at crikey.com:

One of the unusual things about the long drawn out dispute between  Qantas management and its international pilot and licensed engineers unions is the difference in the narratives chosen by the company and its employees.

The company does much of its talking about costs. The unions do almost all their talking about the management actions that they see as destroying the standards that are the strength of the brand. Neither side is responding to the narrative of the other.

And the management controls the general media coverage to the extent that its voice is heard the loudest, with the contrary voices either unreported or given a few token lines.  This writer doesn’t accept everything that either side says, but in fairness, thinks the union voices should be heard, whether they are right or wrong, because unless they are heard, how can anyone come to informed conclusions?

In our discussion it becomes clear that Qantas management has decided to trade security for profit, which is something all air travellers should be very concerned about. The added irony is that, while they are neglecting essential safety considerations in relation to aircraft maintenance, airlines are spending increasing amounts of money on invasive and useless security measures such as naked x-ray scanners.

Hope you enjoy the show!

Leonard Clampett,

the video you linked is a really old conglomerate of all sorts of claims that have been debunked ad nauseam.

What do you think is the ultimate proof for the existence of chemtrails?

Why should we have to assume there is such a thing like chemtrails? How are they different from contrails?

If you open the link you will see the reference to chemtrail area forecasts. The other link I wish to post is refused by the “Truth news” which claims it may be SPAM and “will be moderated”, probably because it mentions chemtrails in the link. However, I will try again by separating the words. http://www.chemtrail forecast.com/main.html

Leonard Clampett,

about the link you posted - where is the relevance in the discussion about persistent contrails?

Leonard Clampett,

after you consistently refused to accept the fact that fuel combustion generates more water than the equivalent of fuel burnt - even when a Qantas pilot confirmed this - I am highly skeptical of your “aviation life experience”. I hope you understand that.

So there are more explanations needed before your claims can be taken seriously.

1. How did you determine that the ambient conditions at the upper troposphere were not conducive to the formation of contrails this summer?

2. How did you determine the causal connection between trails and lack of rain?

3. How did you determine the altitude of the low trail that you saw? How can you be sure it was below the cumulus? Why not above (remember: 3D viewing up to 160m max)? Any pictures maybe?

If you want to do REAL research on the Internet, I strongly suggest to repeat every search query that you issue with the word “debunked” appended. That is the way to do proper research because you see both sides and their arguments. Don’t just fall for sensational claims.

Unfortunately, the Internet is loaded with bunk.

Josh Anonymous,

You apparently do not do much research. Notice how, over the Eastern Australian summer, there have been many chemtrails coincident with usual weather patterns where obvious rain should have been the outcome had the chemtrails not been laid, and it was not, and this during the season when ambient conditions are not conducive to the formation of contrails. Chemtrails are entirely different to what you term “persistent contrails” as you would know if you had sufficient aviation life experience. You may try to explain how there was recently, and I have observed the same many times before, a chemtrail below a layer of fair weather Cu at 8,000 ft and how this could possibly occur without the laws of physics and thermodynamics being turned on their head. I suggest that you do an Internet search for the activities of Bill Gates and geoengineering.
