Sanctions. The CIA was preparing for Peace---with a ruthless determination that the United States would capture the lion's share of spoils from Iraqi Reconstruction contracts in any post-sanctions period. German pilots transporting medical supplies and doctors into Baghdad International Airport at the end of the Clinton Administration had blasted the myth of invincibility surrounding sanctions. To this day, those pilots are anonymous—but they changed the equation in total. Their courage honoring the Berlin Airlifts in the Cold War was quickly copied. Across Europe and the Arab world, activists began to organize humanitarian flights into Baghdad. On the Security Council, France and Russia argued strenuously that the ban on air travel had been self imposed, and the no-fly zone could not prohibit humanitarian flights.    By this time, UN sanctions had killed over 1.7 million Iraqis; wiped out literacy in a single generation; and created artificial starvation in the world's second most oil-rich nation. Iraq's world class hospitals that once rivaled London and New York had been ravaged.  Sick of the misery, the global community refused to stay silent any longer. The CIA saw the writing on the wall. International loathing for "genocide by sanctions" had reached such a peak of outrage that there was no possibility of re-crafting the hated policy. Secretary of State Colin Powell's vision of "smart sanctions" had come too late. The CIA was determined to control the agenda for the advantage of the United States, however. And so quietly through my back channel, we undertook a proactive, covert dialogue over exactly what concessions Iraq would offer the United States, in exchange for lifting the sanctions. As a long-time opponent of sanctions myself, I was eager to get results. That dialogue—even the existence of our back channel to Iraq's Embassy at the United Nations from 1996 to 2003—was strictly covert, kept close and precious— away from Washington pundits and think tanks whose ignorance would have smashed all progress on the rocks. Our dialogue was no less vigorous for that secrecy.   This was the CIA at its best. Nobody got soft on Saddam's government. By any measure, the CIA's demands far exceeded the U.N. mandate to eliminate Iraq's WMDs. If there was going to be peace, it would have to be rock solid, with zero chance that Baghdad would bite the United States in retaliation for those years of misery and death. A Prosperous Peace for All What emerged was a dynamic and comprehensive framework hammered out with Iraq's Ambassador Dr. Saeed Hasan and senior diplomats in New York. The agreement required weapons inspections "with no conditions." But the deal accomplished much more. By February, 2001—nine months before 9/11—Baghdad authorized the FBI to send Terrorism Task Force into Iraq, with permission to conduct investigations and make arrests.  After 9/11, Iraq sweetened its contribution with promises to hand over banking and financial documents on Al Qaeda figures. There's no question but that Iraq's cooperation qualified as the most substantial windfall in the War on Terrorism. Notably, it targeted actual terrorists--- not Islamic charities or frightened taxi drivers and plumbers with the wrong accents and ethnic coloring. Every time Senator John McCain or Dick Cheney pounded the lectern on CNN, and demanded an interview with Al Anai, or other cooperation--- Iraq complied within hours. The Peace Dividend Most importantly, the CIA was determined that the U.S. would retain a strong footing inside Iraq in all major economic sectors, in any post sanctions period. The CIA envisioned a great Peace Bonanza for U.S. corporations that would have gorged American workers and shareholders with billions of dollars in revenues. It was a vision of prosperity and wealth creation, which put the United States at the center of the banquet table. The CIA wanted jobs, more jobs and profits. The goal was to rival the economic impact of the reconstruction of Germany and Japan after World War II, driving as many of those economic benefits to U.S. coffers as possible. Iraq was happy to oblige. Those were days when the United States commanded such power on the world stage that other nations recognized Washington would have to be gratified in order for a change of policy to move forward. And so Baghdad agreed to Every Single Demand put forth by the CIA--- without complaint that U.S. conditions far exceeded the scope of the U.N. mandate for ending the sanctions. The CIA demanded and won Iraq's agreement to allow all U.S. corporations to return to Baghdad, post-sanctions, at the same level of market share as before the first Gulf War in 1990. Iraq promised first tier oil concessions to U.S. Oil Corporations in all new exploration and development leases, with priority contracts for the purchase of American oil equipment. Baghdad also promised the U.S. could join existing oil leases held by other countries on a second and third tier basis. In January, 2003, Iraq offered the LUKoil Contract held by Russia to U.S. oil companies instead, in a final, tragic bid to avert War. By December, 2001, Iraq agreed to give preferential contracts, post-sanctions, to U.S. Corporations in telecommunications In fact, the CIA demanded and won Iraq's agreement to give the U.S. preferential contracts in health care, hospital equipment and pharmaceuticals. Iraq agreed to buy 1 million American-manufactured automobiles every year for 10 years. This would have required imports from the U.S., not licensing of technology. That would have created thousands of high-paying Union jobs in the Rust Belt of America. Imagine the modern day Global Economy if the CIA's vision had prevailed. There would be no bankruptcy of the Middle Class. No housing foreclosure crisis. No government stimulus packages to bail out Banks or the U.S. automobile industry. There would be No Great Depression on All Points of the Global Horizon. This bounty would have extended to Britain and all of Europe and Asia. All countries would have joined the Feast of Reconstruction in Iraq. The prosperity flowing from this Peace Bonanza would have multiplied like loaves of bread throughout the world. Imagine better schools. Universal health coverage. Substantial new investment in green energy, mass transit and infrastructure improvements. That's what the Middle Class sacrificed in this Bonfire of the Vanities. Republicans quickly recognized American voters would be irate over those costs. No longer fired with courage in the belly, and lacking the strength of conviction, Republicans shifted blame for their mediocre war policy onto the Intelligence Community—which had developed this peace framework— rather than take responsibility for their own decision making. All three U.S. Assets covering the Iraqi Embassy in New York got thrown in prison as "Iraqi Agents," citing the Patriot Act. All of us faced secret charges, secret evidence and secret grand jury testimony. Myself, I spent a year locked up on Carswell Air Force Base without a trial or hearing, threatened with indefinite detention. In a violent effort to force to me to recant, I was threatened with forcible drugging with Haldol, Ativan and Prozac. Only thanks to blowback from the blogs and internet radio was the truth that I had lived saved from a chemical lobotomy. There's a reason why, and it bodes very badly for America.  The Cost of War The tragic truth is that pulling U.S. soldiers out from Iraq will not reverse those negative consequences for the U.S. economy or taxpayers. The Middle Class is down for the count and not getting up.  Our grand children will be financing this failed War in Baghdad with hefty income taxes to pay America's creditors in China for decades to come. There's serious question as to whether the War in Iraq has ended the "American Century." The United States has hemorrhaged $4 TRILLION on the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and deficits continue to escalate in Kabul. Military spending for defense contractors has increased 81 percent since the 9/11 attack, while disability and health benefits for U.S. Veterans have stagnated. Over 4,000 U.S. Soldiers died in Iraq--- while another 30,000 suffered serious traumatic injuries, paralysis, amputations and head injuries. An American soldier attempts suicide every 80 minutes, according to Veterans for Peace, which has demanded more community outreach to save their lives Post traumatic stress cripples tens of thousands of young American soldiers who face great difficulty returning to work and family life. For all of the glory of U.S. military budgets, we have nothing to give our young people in uniform. And that's not all. What of that grand vision called the War on Terrorism? Cunning like a fox, Saddam Hussein tried to give the United States banking and financial documents that would have closed down the financial pipeline feeding terrorism. Mostly that financing derives from heroin profits, which would have resulted in substantial seizures, and killed two birds with one powerful stone. Yet for all the rhetoric, Republican leaders so desired to attack Saddam that they left all terrorism financing in circulation. There's no question but those monies have financed attacks on U.S. and allied partners in Pakistan, India, Iraq, Afghanistan, Indonesia, the Philippines—wherever radical Islam is engaged in violent retaliation against U.S. military operations. And so the greatest irony is that the U.S. has financed our Enemies' War on Terrorism against our own people. That's just plain stupid. And dangerous. The damage goes farther. Former CIA Director of Operations and head of the Bin Laden Unit, Michael Scheuer argues that U.S. interventions are in danger of igniting another major terrorist attack on U.S. soil. Guaranteed to outscore 9/11, the next attack will most likely involve a dirty nuclear attack on the financial district of New York City, which would push the global economy over the edge, into the abyss. Pulling out of Iraq creates an opportunity to reduce that risk—but only if Washington learns the lessons of its past mistakes and resists the temptation to engage in new military mis-adventures. The Weapons Trap in Iran Indeed, as the world weighs another War against Iran, we must engage in a serious conversation as to whether any nation is worth the risk of destruction to our own? Veterans and anti-war activists alike must force a consideration of what our economy has suffered already—since the value of human life has become so cheap. We must examine the costs of War to our economy, our taxpayers and our soldiers, with much greater clarity and honesty than Republicans in Congress applied to the War in Iraq. Tragically, the War in Iraq has had an unexpected consequence. It has persuaded Iran of the dangers of nuclear disarmament. Baghdad would have been much less vulnerable to U.S. military adventurism, if only Saddam's government had possessed Weapons of Mass Destruction, per U.N. accusations. Baghdad's inability to mount an effective defense created an irresistible provocation for War Hawks in Washington and London. That lesson of the Iraq War is not lost on Teheran. On that contrary, it has proved to Iranian leaders that WMDs are vital to their future independence. Only a guarantee of "mutual assured destruction" will preserve the freedom of their country. Unquestionably, that is the greatest tragedy of all, with more dangerous consequences to come. One must ask: Would the CIA's vision of peace been so terrible after all? In the second half Rochelle presents some of her research into a bizarre phenomenon known as "animal mutilation". From wikipedia: A hallmark of these incidents is the surgical nature of the mutilation, and unexplained phenomena such as the complete draining of the animal's blood, loss of internal organs with no obvious point of entry, and surgically precise removal of the reproductive organs and anal coring. Another reported event is that the animal is found dumped in an area where there are no marks or tracks leading to or from the carcass, even when it is found in soft ground or mud. The surgical-type wounds tend to be cauterized by an intense heat and made by very sharp/precise instruments, with no bleeding evident. Often flesh will be removed to the bone in an exact manner, consistent across cases, such as removal of flesh from around the jaw exposing the mandible. Since the time that reports of purported animal mutilations began, the causes have been attributed variously to natural decomposition, normal predators, cryptid predators (like the Chupacabra), extraterrestrials, secretive governmental or military agencies, and cults. "Mutilations" have been the subject of two independent federal investigations in the United States. The Act allows for the military detention of American citizens without due process, about which writer and activist Naomi Wolf has this to say: Our leaders appear to be supporting this bill thinking that they will always be what they are now, in the fading light of a once-great democracy — those civilian leaders who safely and securely sit in freedom and DIRECT the military. In inhabiting this bubble, which their own actions are about to destroy, they are cocooned by an arrogance of power, placing their own security in jeopardy by their own hands, and ignoring history and its inevitable laws. The moment this bill becomes law, though Congress is accustomed, in a weak democracy, to being the ones who direct and control the military, the power roles will reverse: Congress will no longer be directing and in charge of the military: rather, the military will be directing and in charge of individual Congressional leaders, as well as in charge of everyone else — as any Parliamentarian in any society who handed this power over to the military can attest. Perhaps Congress assumes that it will always only be ‘they’ who are targeted for arrest and military detention: but sadly, Parliamentary leaders are the first to face pressure, threats, arrest and even violence when the military obtains to power to make civilian arrests and hold civilians in military facilities without due process. There is no exception to this rule. Just as I traveled the country four years ago warning against the introduction of torture and secret prisons – and confidently offering a hundred thousand dollar reward to anyone who could name a nation that allowed torture of the ‘other’ that did not eventually turn this abuse on its own citizens — (confident because I knew there was no such place) — so today I warn that one cannot name a nation that gave the military the power to make civilian arrests and hold citizens in military detention, that did not almost at once turn that power almost against members of that nation’s own political ruling class. This makes sense — the obverse sense of a democracy, in which power protects you; political power endangers you in a militarized police state: the more powerful a political leader is, the more can be gained in a militarized police state by pressuring, threatening or even arresting him or her. Could they have been just puffs of dust being pushed out of the Towers by falling floors? Are they visual evidence of explosive charges? A: The isolated ejections 20-60 stories below the demolition front appear to be composed of pulverized building materials, including concrete. There was no known mechanism by which pulverized building materials being created up at the zone of destruction could have been transported so far down through the building and to the exterior. Air conditioning vents would not have tolerated such pressures, and there was no other "channel" in the building to deliver “compressed air”. There is no reason, on the “dust puff” theory, for such blasts to be as isolated as they were. Massive air pressure which would delivered by the (missing) “pile driver” down through the elevator hoist ways and out through a given floor would have broken most or all windows on that floor – not created the highly focalized pin-point ejections that are seen on the videos. The breakage of one or two windows on a given floor would not have relieved enough pressure across an entire floor area to prevent the breakage of many other windows nearby. Images like this one reveal that the squibs were not merely puffs of air, as they have the same hue and consistency as pulverized solid building materials. Another problem with the “dust puff” theory is that the pulverized building materials would not have been transported so quickly. Air would have been pushed ahead of such materials, resulting in transparent puffs of air flowing through the freshly broken windows. Physicist David Chandler has also shown that some of these ejections came from the corners of the buildings. Since there are no windows on the corners, these ejections could not have been the result of air pressure. Furthermore, calculations performed by Dr. Crockett Grabbe show that the horizontal ejection rate of the squibs is disproportional to the floor and debris descent speeds that are allegedly responsible for them. As Kevin Ryan has shown, the ejection speed of the squibs from the Towers also matches the speeds recorded for ejections caused by explosives. As to these ejections appearing only after the collapse initiation, it should be noted that the North Tower's antenna dropped before any other building movement is seen, which is evidence that demolition devices were working on the core before any squibs were seen emerging out of the perimeter walls. There is also video showing that some of these ejections occurred even before the collapses began. More from Kim Bax: REDACTED ON REQUEST The injunction apears to be spurred by the allegations of former private investigator Col Chapman, who claims that while working as a contractor for Seven Network, he engaged in surveillance of members of the Corby Family, including bugging of homes and the use of GPS tracking devices. The climate science establishment  has predictably hit back with a swift and savage rebuttal: Michael Mann, director of the Earth System Science Centre at Penn State University and a scientist whose name appears in several of the emails, dismissed the latest email release as “truly pathetic”. He instead said the hackers were “agents doing the dirty bidding of the fossil fuel industry know they can’t contest the fundamental science of human-caused climate change. So they have instead turned to smear, innuendo, criminal hacking of websites, and leaking out-of-context snippets of personal emails in their effort to try to confuse the public about the science and thereby forestall any action to combat this critical threat. In a key passage, Klein states the following: "Those with strong 'egalitarian' and 'communitarian' worldviews (marked by an inclination toward collective action and social justice, concern about inequality and suspicion of corporate power) overwhelmingly accept the scientific consensus on climate change. On the other hand, those with strong 'hierarchical' and 'individualistic' worldviews (marked by opposition to government assistance for the poor and minorities, strong support for industry and a belief that we all get what we deserve) overwhelmingly reject the scientific consensus." This appears to be an admission that the views of the left and the right on climate change are shaped more by their political ideals than by any regard for science based evidence. However, as we have been at pains to demonstrate on this show, the truth is the only thing that really matters, and the attempt to make climate science a political tool to serve agendas for social change is both a betrayal of science and of public trust in scientists. As such it can only be seen as anathema to freedom, democracy and science itself. Nonetheless this style of thinking, which Klein describes as "communitarian", appears to be very influential and many believe that it is the way of the future. The deluded include many people of good will, who are too busy (working to support the parasitic class) to  check that their news sources, schools, and government officials are giving them both sides of the story, or that their search engines are behaving fairly (who would know?). People can simultaneously belong to both groups. Some of the parasitic class, deceive themselves that they are helping. The grounding of the Qantas fleet was done with no warning to passengers, which makes this action far more disruptive than a strike which would require the union to give 72 hours notice. The image of Qantas is further tarnished by the fact that the CEO of Qantas received a 71% pay rise before the fleet was grounded. A summary of the current situation is provided by ABC News: Industrial action by three unions, representing engineers, baggage and catering staff and long-haul pilots, has been ongoing for several months over pay and conditions. Qantas says that the strike action had until Saturday resulted in 70,000 passengers being affected, more than 600 flights cancelled and seven aircraft grounded. More than 68,000 customers affected since grounding at 5pm (AEDT) Saturday. About 447 flights have been cancelled. The fleet grounding will impact 108 planes at 22 airports, domestically and internationally. In our discussion we look at some of the techniques being used to create "group consciousness" at the protests here and overseas, such as hand signs and chanting, and we ask whether such tendencies are supportive of human freedom. Although the protesters claim they are the 99%, our finding is that they are largely made up of anti-capitalist, socialist, collectivist and eco-fascist minorites within our society. There was no sign of the huge anti-carbon tax movement, which, according to many polls, represents the views of the vast majority of Australians. Speakers at the event were heavily promoting the "action on climate change" mantra, and the strong presence of the socialist alliance and green left weekly further reinforces the impression that this movement is essentially owned by the radical left. Does the socialist flavour we saw in Sydney reflect the tendencies of the wider global movement? According to Charles Gasparino of the Murdoch-owned New York Post, It’s not an overstatement to describe Zuccotti Park as New York’s Marxist epicenter. Flags with the iconic face of the Marxist revolutionary Che Guevara are everywhere; the only American flag I saw was hanging upside down. The “occupiers” openly refer to each other as “comrade,” and just about every piece of literature on offer (free or for sale) advocated socialism in the Marxist tradition as a cure-all for the inequalities of the American economic system. In Rome, the violence has been blamed on left-wing groups, which is predictable, but possibly an attempt to demonise groups which the government wishes to suppress. Overall, there is still much potential for this movement to become a force for positive change, but there is also a huge opportunity for it to become merely another vehicle for those who think they can steer human civilsation in a particular direction. The "occupy" groups have been conducting what they call "general assemblies", a term reminiscent of the United Nations. Not so many months ago, we had David Cameron and William Hague declaring that the Libya Question was “not about removing Gaddafi” and that all it would take would be an immediate ceasefire from the Libyan Armed Forces. Not so many months ago we had David Cameron and William Hague declaring that the war would cost in the region of 200 million pounds, that there would be no NATO boots on the ground and that NATO would not arm the “rebels”. What they did not tell us was that the French and Americans had been planning this imperialist little adventure for years-- What they did not tell us was that the rebel flags had been ordered well in advance from a British company-- What they did not tell us was that the entire operation was indeed to remove Colonel Gaddafi, not because he posed any threat to his “rebels” (after all, what do you do when tens of thousands of marauding thugs armed with machine guns take to the streets, decapitating Negroes, chanting racist slogans, promising to ethnically cleanse Libya of Negroes, torching government buildings, raping and killing women and children and destroying public and private property?) They knew that the decision “to go in” had been taken long before the rebels strafed their own position to blame Colonel Gaddafi. They knew that their own media had been spreading lies about the Libyan Air Force bombing civilians – the one bombing civilians is NATO. We saw the British reaction in draconian measures – when a few hundred bored schoolkids ran amok in August. One wonders whether Cameron would simply have given up and walked away from Number Ten Downing Street if they had been armed, or if someone had done to his youth what he did to Libya’s. What they did not tell us was that this entire charade is about removing Colonel Gaddafi from power because his humanitarian and developmental projects in Africa and his plan to launch a gold-based currency, the Gold Dinar, would be too costly for selfish western interests. What Cameron and Hague did not tell you is that their forces are to spend seven times more of the British tax-payers’ money than they originally admitted – nearly two billion, or two thousand million or 2,000,000,000 pounds… on what? I will tell you. They have strafed the Libyan water supply (war crime) to “break the back of the population” They have targeted the electricity grid (war crime) They have targeted private homes (war crime) They have taken out civilian structures with military equipment (war crime) They have murdered children (war crime, and they did not even apologise) They have targeted civilians (war crime). They then held a conference in Paris to divide up Libya’s assets. What they have also not told you is that the Libyan Armed Forces are largely intact. What they have not told you is that parts of Tripoli still fly the Green Flag (symbol of the Jamahiriya, the democratic government which Muammar al-Qathafi advises). What they do not tell you is that there are still green Marches in Benghazi. What they do not tell you is that Mahmoud Jibril dare not enter Tripoli. They do not tell you where Jalil (the number 2) came from. They do not tell you the background of the TNC. They do not tell you the tribes have voted for Gaddafi. They do not tell you that the crack desert fighters.the Tuareg, who decide who crosses the desert and who does not, have sided with Muammar Gaddafi against the TNC. They do not tell you that the Loyalists in Libya include the hearts and minds of the Libyan population whether or not they are taking up arms against the terrorists. The NATO special forces and this scourge have frightened many into cowering in their homes - but this does not spell support, even tacitly. They do not tell you they indeed have NATO boots on the ground, breaching UNSC resolutions. They have indeed armed the “rebels” (another breach of UNSC resolutions), and they have indeed employed mercenaries – hundreds of thousands of them (a huge breach of UNSC resolutions). They have not told you that NATO and its terrorists have suffered defeat after defeat in recent weeks, are unable to enter Bani Walid, are unable to enter Sirte and the only tactic that remains open is by carpet-bombing any areas of resistance, including homes, hospitals and schools to bomb the terrorists in. Is that noble? It is a war crime. It is an act of terrorism and David Cameron and William Hague, along with their French friend Sarkozy and that American in the White House, are using YOUR hard-earned money to perpetrate this outrage, which is sure to cost the UK thousands of jobs as retaliatory measures kick in across Africa. Sorry Mr. Templeton, we do not have any money for your mother’s cancer treatment, I am afraid she will have to die; sorry Mr. Johnson, there is no more funding for your son’s leukaemia treatment, we do have palliative care, do you know what that is? And as for your now hospital wing, new school, new clinic, a raspberry in your faces as Cameron and Hague stick the middle finger to their own people. We are joined during the show by Anne Easby who was at the protest and who filed this report earlier today: Five hundred people marched on Anthony Albanese's office today to protest about his insult to the Convoy of No Confidence on 22 August 2011.  The rally and march were organised by Consumer and Taxpayer Association Jacques Laxale, as a result of public outrage after Mr Albanese, the Member for Grayndler, called the Convoy "the Convoy of No Consequence" during question time while the protest was underway.  Mr Albanese is the Federal Labor Member for Grayndler, the Minister for Infrastructure and Transport and Leader of the House and his comments were reported by the media across Australia. The Gillard Government laughed at Mr Albanese's comments and an emboldened Kelvin Thompson, Labor MP for Wills in Victoria, later called the Convoy "the convoy of incontinence" after he'd seen a two Winnebagos and a caravan parked near Parliament House.  At no time did any member of the Government walk 200 metres across the road to meet with the Convoy to hear their grievances. The well behaved but very vocal crowd marched down Marrickville Road behind the 'death of democracy' coffin, carrying various signs and armed with megaphones, Australian flags and inflatable toy hammers.  People of all ages and many nationalities joined in the call for a new election, to stop the carbon tax and Government waste.  Many were angry about the Government's mishandling of the Malaysian solution, the direct threat to News Ltd by Bob Brown and the removal of pages from the Internet after direct requests to media bosses by Ms Gillard.  But what the crowd really wanted was an apology from Mr Albanese for his comments.  No apology was forthcoming. Mr Albanese, flanked by security, addressed the rally and answered questions presented to him by Chris Johnson from CATA.  Mr Albanese answered the questions, however gave his support to the Gillard Government and said he fully supported the Government's position on the carbon tax. He also told the rally that there were more people at the Petersham Town Hall question and answer night last month than at the Marrickville protest.  These comments did nothing to endear him to the crowd, and his voice was drowned out by calls for a new election and for the Government to stop the carbon tax.   Other speakers at the rally included the Victorian Liberal Federal Member for Indi, Sophie Mirabella.  Ms Mirabella said "Please maintain your right to a democratic say.  Please do not ever be intimidated, no matter how smarmy, how sarcastic any member of parlimanet is, no matter how exalted their position.  Never be intimidated.' Malcolm Roberts from the Galileo Movement spoke to the crowd about the science and presented a two-page document to Mr Albanese for comment.  Anita Donlan drove all the way to Sydney from Bendigo Victoria, to address the rally.  Ms Donlan was MC at the Convoy rally in Canberra and was insulted by Mr Albanese's comments against decent, hardworking Australians who had travelled for days to be heard in Canberra.   94 year old ex POW, Verdun Walsh, joined the protest because he was deeply offended and wanted his voice to be heard.  He carried a placard saying "I am 94 years of age, an ex POW, I am not incontinent, I am not of no consequence, I vote, save the Labor Party name, resign now Mr Albanese".  Other speakers included Norma Biggood, Angela Liati and Peter Madden from the Christian Democrats. It is concerning that the media is reporting Mr Albanese was ‘jostled’ and abused at the rally.  This is not correct.  Mr Albanese was surrounded by security and the organisers confirm nothing physical occurred.  The mood of the crowd was angrier today than at previous rallies and after speaking to many people, it is evident that the people there were disgusted by the performance of the Government and very concerned about the damage they are doing to Australia. A smaller pro carbon tax rally was organised by GetUp! to commence an hour before the rally, however crowd numbers were small - estimated at 25-50 people.  Mr Albanese told the GetUp! supporters that he was incredulous that 200 people thought they could change the mind of a Government.   Mr Albanese was obviously walking on both sides of the fence today. Qantas has determined that the plan to outsource vital maintenance procedures is international "best practice" - an odd twist of language when you consider the fact that these changes will decrease the amount of oversight given to the highly qualified and dedicated Australian crews, delegating these responsibilities to contractors working in another country for whom a given airplane is just a hunk of metal. It turns out that the "best practices" which Qantas intends to follow also affect the bottom line. In effect these are cost cutting measures, dressed up to appear like improvements in efficiency. The peculiarities of the dispute are outlined in a recent article at crikey.com: One of the unusual things about the long drawn out dispute between  Qantas management and its international pilot and licensed engineers unions is the difference in the narratives chosen by the company and its employees. The company does much of its talking about costs. The unions do almost all their talking about the management actions that they see as destroying the standards that are the strength of the brand. Neither side is responding to the narrative of the other. And the management controls the general media coverage to the extent that its voice is heard the loudest, with the contrary voices either unreported or given a few token lines.  This writer doesn’t accept everything that either side says, but in fairness, thinks the union voices should be heard, whether they are right or wrong, because unless they are heard, how can anyone come to informed conclusions? In our discussion it becomes clear that Qantas management has decided to trade security for profit, which is something all air travellers should be very concerned about. The added irony is that, while they are neglecting essential safety considerations in relation to aircraft maintenance, airlines are spending increasing amounts of money on invasive and useless security measures such as naked x-ray scanners. In particular we take a look at the influence of socialism on the Greens, with former communist Lee Rhiannon now in the Senate (hence the watermelon image above). Rhiannon was a member of the hard line Socialist Party of Australia which continued to support the Soviets after the brutal supression of the Prague uprising in 1968. From The Australian: Ms Rhiannon was also involved in a public spat over her communist past with author Mark Aarons after he published his account of his parents' prominent involvement in the pro-Moscow Communist Party of Australia. The CPA split from Moscow after Soviet tanks crushed the Prague Spring moves for "socialism with a human face" in Czechoslovakia in 1968, the same year a new spirit of liberty swept the Western world. Aarons wrote that Ms Rhiannon and her parents left the CPA to join the Socialist Party of Australia, which continued to support the Soviets. Ms Rhiannon claimed in a letter to The Sydney Morning Herald that she "joined the 1968 protest against the invasion of Czechoslovakia." But in a letter of his own, Aarons attacked Ms Rhiannon's "astonishing" attempt "to deny the facts in the book about the views and activities of her parents". "Rhiannon also joined the SPA, whose main rationale was to support the invasion and the Soviet Union generally," he wrote. "Rhiannon's refusal to condemn the invasion (and the shooting of Polish workers) is recorded in the University of NSW student newspaper Tharunka (1972). Denial will not alter the facts." Truther groups have been buzzing over the past two days with news about the "defection" of Love Police founder Charlie Veitch from the 9/11 truth movement. Charlie claims to have had his mind changed in New York by experts and patriots who convinced him to let go of his paranoid conspiracy delusions and accept that 9/11 was in fact carried out by Al Qaeda after all. In the light of the possible disruption caused and doubts raised by Veitch, I feel it's important to remind everyone of what I, as webmaster of www.911oz.com, the Australian 9/11 Truth Movement, believe and don't believe. Firstly, let me make it absolutely clear: I don't believe the US Government orchestrated 9/11. Surprised? Well read on... When we talk about a bank robbery being an "inside job" we generally mean that someone inside the bank helped make it happen, not that the bank robbed itself. The same kind of reasoning applies to the proposition that 9/11 was an inside job: there may have been a few insiders within the government who enabled it, but the job was probably carried out by an external team of mercenaries. The question of who conceived, planned and funded the operation remains unanswered. Unfortunately the 9/11 "inside job" theory has come to imply, for many, total complicity and top down orchestration by the government. This revised interpretation of "inside job" is often attributed to 9/11 truthers by those who wish to discredit and silence them. Many truthers don't quite appreciate the nuances of meaning, and allow their views to be characterised in this way. This exposes them to ridicule based on the implausibility of thousands of government employees being involved in a murderous plot and keeping it secret. I do believe there were people within government who assisted in 9/11, but that is a far cry from saying the Government orchestrated the attack. One of the main reasons I believe there were people within government who assisted is because we have irrefutable evidence that WTC Building 7 was blown up - and it would have been virtually impossible to get access to that building without government clearances. Another point which strongly suggests complicity by agents within government is the way in which the Bush administration avoided an investigation. They avoided forensic investigations of the building fires and they ducked the majority of questions brought by family members to the 9/11 Commission. Both Bush and Cheney refused to testify under oath. I concede these points do not prove the government "did it", but they raise pertinent questions about certain individuals within government. I do not believe that "no plane hit the Pentagon". There is just not enough evidence to support the "no plane at the Pentagon" view. I do believe that the people have a right to see all the available video evidence which would prove the government's thesis that a plane did hit the building. The fact that the government will not provide that evidence once again suggests they are hiding something. This demands investigation. I do believe that confessed 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was tortured. I believe he was waterboarded at least 183 times. This fact itself puts a huge hole in the government's case and provides another irrefutable reason why there needs to be a new independent investigation. I do believe that top government officials lied about the presence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, and also attempted to frame Saddam Hussein for conspiracy in the 9/11 attacks. Such gross dishonesty would lead any sensible person to doubt the veracity of unproven claims about Osama bin Laden and 9/11. Conspiracy debunkers like to represent the 9/11 truth position in terms of the positive claims made about specific events. They try to conflate all those different claims into a generalised concept of what "truthers" think. Thus, claims about holograms and space beams are combined with theories about the destruction of the twin towers, the Pentagon "flyover" and voice-morphing technology. They often avoid WTC 7, because that is the hardest one to debunk. The arguments of Charlie Veitch, who recently converted to the official 9/11 conspiracy theory, are illustrative of the "troll debunker" style. Charlie suggests that 9/11 truthers are paranoid and delusional, and that their fertile imaginations are running rampant, leading them to invent fantastic theories about events which have more mundane explanations. He completely neglects the point that much of 9/11 truth consists of analysis of the inconsistencies in the official viewpoint in conjunction with acknowledged facts such as those presented above. That approach can't be "debunked" at all - so it's ignored. Building 7 remains a problem though, even for Charlie Veitch, who asserts (based on mysterious un-named sources) that the collapse of WTC 7 can be explained by the damage sustained from the collapse of the twin towers earlier in the day. It's a convincing argument, only there's a problem - it was rejected in the official NIST report: "Other than initiating the fires in WTC 7, the damage from the debris from WTC 1 had little effect on initiating the collapse of WTC 7." - NCSTAR 1A, p xxxvii In closing let me affirm that I remain determined to uphold what we have been fighting for since the beginning of this movement.
