A variety of strories from Australia and around the world are covered in tonight's show.

Federal Reserve to Buy Up to $1 Trillion in Government Bonds, Mortgage Debt

U.S. central bank policy makers announced new actions Wednesday to help jump-start the nation's ailing economy.

Federal Reserve officials announced a plan to purchase up to $300 billion in long-term U.S. government bonds to bolster the nation's economy.

The central bank also announced that it would purchase up to $750 billion of additional mortgage-backed securities, which lost value with the collapse of the U.S. housing market.

The hope is that by unburdening banks of these assets, they will increase lending to potential home buyers.

US Federal Reserve takes the Zimbabwe option

China Calls For Super Reserve Currency

BEIJING — China is calling for a new global currency to replace the dominant dollar, showing a growing assertiveness on revamping the world economy ahead of next week's London summit on the financial crisis.

The surprise proposal by Beijing's central bank governor reflects unease about its vast holdings of U.S. government bonds and adds to Chinese pressure to overhaul a global financial system dominated by the dollar and Western governments. Both the United States and the European Union brushed off the idea.

Police raid Wikileaks.de domain owner Theodor Reppe's home over 'censorship lists'

POLICE have raided a Wikileaks associate's homes in Dresden and Jena after the website published a list of banned websites.
Theodor Reppe owns the German domain registration for "wikileaks.de", one of the many URLs used by the whistleblowing website.

Stephen Conroy says leaked list of banned websites 'seems like ACMA's blacklist'

DESPITE his denial last week, Communications Minister Stephen Conroy claims the leaked website blacklists published on Wikleaks now closely resemble the Government watchdog's official list.

Three lists thought to be from the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) were published online over the past seven days.

Senator Conroy admitted that the latest list, dated March 18th, "seemed to be close" to ACMA's current blacklist.

Internet filter blacklist leaked on web

The communication regulator's blacklist of banned internet sites has apparently been leaked, prompting an internet advocacy group to accuse the Government of making it easy to access child pornography.

The Government is planning to introduce a mandatory internet filter that will block access to a list of dangerous websites.

The list of sites - managed by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) - is designed to catalogue sites containing child pornography or other criminal content.

MP Galloway is banned from Canada

George Galloway, a British member of Parliament, has been banned from Canada on security grounds, the country's immigration service has confirmed.

Mr Galloway, a Respect Party MP, said the ban was "idiotic" and he would look at legal action to try to overturn it.

British media reported the decision was due to his views on Afghanistan and the presence of Canadian troops there.

It's official: Red Cross report says Bush Administration tortured prisoners

US interrogators attached detainees to collars like dogs and used their leashes to slam them against walls, forced them to stand for days wearing only diapers, and tied detainees necks with towels and threw them against plywood walls, according to accounts in a secret 2007 report issued by the Red Cross to be printed in a New York magazine and leaked on Monday.

The report -- issued by the International Committee of the Red Cross and kept secret for the last two years -- is the first first-hand document to legally say the Bush Administration's harsh interrogation techniques "constituted torture." They strongly imply that CIA interrogators violated international law.

Bikie laws 'will stand up to High Court'

NSW is considering introducing South Australia-style anti-bikie laws, after a man was killed during a vicious brawl between Hells Angels and rival Comancheros gang members at Sydney Airport on Sunday.

The South Australian laws allow the government to declare bikie gangs to be prohibited criminal groups, and police to arrest their members for criminal association.

Absurd anti-bikie laws do not stop bikies, but legalising drugs will

New South Wales Premier Nathan Rees is today contemplating adopting his South Australian counterpart Mike Rann’s absurd anti-bikie laws. As I noted in Crikey on 1 April last year, these laws are largely unenforceable, cement in law the concept of guilt by association and would do nothing to lessen the problem of bikie gangs’ violence because they completely miss the point -- which is that bikie gangs thrive on our refusal to decriminalise drugs.

The Serious and Organised Crime (Control) Act passed through the South Australian Parliament in May last year make the anti-terrorism laws look like a freedom charter.

On tonight's show we take a look at the growing "new age" truth movement, which embraces a vast collection of disparate ideas, conspiracy theories and psycho-spiritual concepts.

We explore the epistemological roots of "truth" and try to get to the bottom of the social phenomenon that is this wider truth movement.

In the first half of the show I am joined by Dan Collins, and in the second half Josh Jackson joins the discussion.

On today's show we examine the federal government's plan to implement nation-wide mandatory internet censorship.

The "cleanfeed" system will be mandatory on all ISPs and there will be no opt out. The government will have sole discretion to decide for us what is "inappropriate" web content.

There are many problematic questions associated with the government's planned system, none of which have been properly addressed. Here are just a few:

  • What is the criteria by which the government will decide if a site is banned?

  • Will owners of banned sites have a right of review, if so what will the procedure be?

  • Will the banned material be subject to FOI requests?

  • Will the ban apply to web URLs or (potentially shared) IP addresses?

  • How will the general public know that a given site has been banned?

  • Will the government be banning sites based on the Sedition Act?

  • Will the government be banning music file sharing portals like bittorrent?

These are just a few of the many pressing questions associated with internet filtering.
Here are a few articles to read:

Here are some Australian websites to check out:

Here are some steps you can take:

Contact Senator Conroy

Contacting the Minister will let him know that his constituents, the Australian public, are not on board with his impractical plan.
Call the Minister.

There's nothing like a personal phone call to get the message across. Call the minister's office on (03) 9650 1188 and let them know your objections.
Write to the Minister.

A personalised letter to the Minister sends a powerful message: We don't like the policy, and we care. Letters can be sent to the Ministerial office:

Senator Stephen Conroy
Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy
Level 4, 4 Treasury Place
Melbourne Vic 3002

If you're not sure what to say, you might wish to use the following as a template:
Dear Minister,

As an Australian and an internet user, I have serious concerns about your mandatory Internet filtering initiative.
Given the importance your Government has attached to modernising Australia's broadband network, pursuing a policy that can only slow down and increase the costs of home internet access seems misguided at best.

Australian households are diverse, and most do not have young children, so mandating a one-size-fits-all clean feed approach will not serve the public well. I don't think it is the Government's role to decide what's appropriate for me or my children, and neither do most Australians.

Given the amount of Internet content available, the Government will never be able to classify it all and filters will always result in an unacceptable level of over-blocking. I feel that the time and money could be spent in better ways both to protect children and improve Australia's digital infrastructure. Australian parents need better education about the risks their children face online. Trying to rid the Internet of adult content is futile, and can only distract from that mission.

Sincerely,
Internet User
City, State

Email the Minister

Although not as effective as a letter or call, every bit helps. Email Senator Conroy at: minister (at) dbcde.gov.au.

Contact your local representative

Your local Memeber of Parliament is your representative and wants to hear about your concerns. Let your member know that you are unhappy with this policy.

Not sure who to contact? Find your local member’s contact information.

Contact your ISP

Your Internet Service Provider is probably just as worried about this policy as you are, but letting them know your concerns will help in their own efforts.

Not sure how to contact your ISP? This list may help.

On Friday, 12 September, we recorded our show with a live studio audience at the Tom Mann Theatre in Sydney.

The show featured a panel discussion followed by a question and answer session.  On the panel we had the pleasure of the company the following esteemed guests:

  • Gillian Norman (Film Maker)

  • John Bursill (Boeing Engineer)

  • Frank Legge (Chemist)

  • James O'Neill Barrister at Law)

  • Dr. David Leifer (Architect and member of ae911truth.org)

The panel engaged in a lively critique of the new Italian 9/11 film Zero, and we covered a variety of other topics, some of which proved to be controversial within the group.

A big thankyou from Josh and myself to everyone who helped make this happen, especially Jose who managed to find an essential piece of equipment at the last moment!

Please pass this podcast link on to your friends and feel free to download and burn to disk if you wish.

I hope to have the video version online soon.

Tonight we bring you a TNRA exclusive on vaccination and the big brother state.

Last week it was reported in the major media that a Sydney family was on the run from The Department of Community Services and the Police after the Supreme Court issued an order for the the forcible Hep B vaccination of their new-born child.

On the show we have Meryl Dorey, spokesperson for the Australian Vaccination Network. Meryl is currently trying to help the fugitive couple to find legal represention.

Meryl Dorey is a mother of 4 children aged between 12 and 19 years. Her eldest child had several severe reactions to his vaccinations – events which started her on the path to investigating this issue more thoroughly. Through more than 18 years of exhaustive research in medical journals and medical texts, Meryl has come to the conclusion that for a certain proportion of the population, the benefits of vaccination do not outweigh the risks.

In 1994, Meryl combined her energies with a group of parents and health professionals to form the Australian Vaccination Network. The AVN has continued ever since and is dedicated to:

  • ensuring that information on the risks and ineffectiveness of vaccines if made available to anyone seeing it;

  • making sure that vaccination is never made compulsory;

  • pushing for independent peer-reviewed research of vaccination including double-blind studies which have never yet been done.

GAITHERSBURG, Md.—The fall of the 47-story World Trade Center building 7 (WTC 7) in New York City late in the afternoon of Sept. 11, 2001, was primarily due to fires, the Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) announced today following an extensive, three-year scientific and technical building and fire safety investigation. This was the first known instance of fire causing the total collapse of a tall building, the agency stated as it released for public comment its WTC investigation report and 13 recommendations for improving building and fire safety.

“Our study found that the fires in WTC 7, which were uncontrolled but otherwise similar to fires experienced in other tall buildings, caused an extraordinary event,” said NIST WTC Lead Investigator Shyam Sunder. “Heating of floor beams and girders caused a critical support column to fail, initiating a fire-induced progressive collapse that brought the building down.”

On tonight's show we lead with the proposed impeachment of George W. Bush - led by Congressman Dennis Kucinich of Ohio. We play an excerpt from Rep. Kucinich's speech to the house - then we get into a discussion of politics and music with our special studio guest, Simon.

In the second half of the show we speak to the film maker Glen Clancy - creator of "Fool Me Twice", a film which explores evidence that the 2002 Bali Bombings were not indeed the act of fanatical Islamists, but rather orchestrated by intelligence operatives, while the governments of Australia and Indonesia looked the other way.

Fool Me Twice is a must see film - and you can watch the whole thing for free on Google video:

We are very grateful for Glen's time coming on the show.

To our audience: thanks for listening - & see you again real soon!
