How Terahertz Waves Tear Apart DNA

A new model of the way the THz waves interact with DNA explains how the damage is done and why evidence has been so hard to gather

Great things are expected of terahertz waves, the radiation that fills the slot in the electromagnetic spectrum between microwaves and the infrared. Terahertz waves pass through non-conducting materials such as clothes , paper, wood and brick and so cameras sensitive to them can peer inside envelopes, into living rooms and "frisk" people at distance.

Terahertz Radioation

The way terahertz waves are absorbed and emitted can also be used to determine the chemical composition of a material. And even though they don't travel far inside the body, there is great hope that the waves can be used to spot tumours near the surface of the skin.

With all that potential, it's no wonder that research on terahertz waves has exploded in the last ten years or so.

But what of the health effects of terahertz waves? At first glance, it's easy to dismiss any notion that they can be damaging. Terahertz photons are not energetic enough to break chemical bonds or ionise atoms or molecules, the chief reasons why higher energy photons such as x-rays and UV rays are so bad for us. But could there be another mechanism at work?

The evidence that terahertz radiation damages biological systems is mixed. "Some studies reported significant genetic damage while others, although similar, showed none," say Boian Alexandrov at the Center for Nonlinear Studies at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico and a few buddies. Now these guys think they know why.

Alexandrov and co have created a model to investigate how THz fields interact with double-stranded DNA and what they've found is remarkable. They say that although the forces generated are tiny, resonant effects allow THz waves to unzip double-stranded DNA, creating bubbles in the double strand that could significantly interfere with processes such as gene expression and DNA replication. That's a jaw dropping conclusion.

And it also explains why the evidence has been so hard to garner. Ordinary resonant effects are not powerful enough to do do this kind of damage but nonlinear resonances can. These nonlinear instabilities are much less likely to form which explains why the character of THz genotoxic effects are probabilistic rather than deterministic, say the team.

This should set the cat among the pigeons. Of course, terahertz waves are a natural part of environment, just like visible and infrared light. But a new generation of cameras are set to appear that not only record terahertz waves but also bombard us with them. And if our exposure is set to increase, the question that urgently needs answering is what level of terahertz exposure is safe.

Check out “MASS MURDER: OFFICIAL KILLING in Tasmania, Australia” written by Keith Allan Noble PHD, it is the most thoroughly researched book about the Port Arthur Massacre I have ever read. You can contact Keith here: MARTINBRYANTISINNOCENT at gmail.com
Here is a copy of the PDF ebook: members.iinet.net.au/~nedwood/CONTENT.MASS.MURDER.pdf

Hello truth news still a excellent presentation of varied subjects best hopes for the future also just like a request for further topics on national standards economics and production of industrial equipment and basic infrastructure that reflects our nation state and is it possible too have a central kind of hub for governance the current system is based on majority international free trade and capitalism the resources of this land should be controlled from a national level for the people.

I ahve seen the film “The Greatest Story Never Told” ‘bout Adolf Hitler and it’s stunning. We should probably wave a flag because it might change your perception of WWII.

Hello Hereward,
I have listened to this interview on many occasions and always become extremely irritable at the derogatory comments made by the ABC ‘re’ Andrew Wakefield.
I thus refer you and your listeners to a fabulous interview with Dr Wakefield, where he dismantles all the baseless allegations against him.  Sadly, it will never find the light of day on commercial media outlets.  Please share it as widely as possible with friends, family & associates. Just paste the following into your search engine:

Re first hour that I have just enjoyed listening to.  Hereward Fenton’s wrap-up of diverse reported facts on the recent spate of unexplained airline disasters is a gripping tale. His integration of these facts into speculation about repercussions leading to a push for new pilotless technology (elimination of ‘human error’) is interesting IMO, but where will it all lead?  Such questions are valid reflection, not ‘conspiracy theory’.  Mainstream media don’t want ordinary people to reflect too deeply and so try to nip this in the bud through their mantra of “conspiracy theory”.  My subscription to TNRA is well worth it, because I am receiving a good “reflection service” by a commentator who is able to think the unthinkable unlike most people pacified by escapist free to air TV.  And the most unthinkable event in our lives to date is that 9-11 was an orchestrated event engineered by secret and unaccountable government agencies for obvious political and military purposes. Like, fascism.  Mainstream media won’t even entertain that thought!  But, to quote Aristotle, “It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it”.  And another quote from Aristotle for you Hereward.  It is about the human capacity for reflection, that you possess in abundance.  I remember learning of Aristotle’s idea that the most noble thing a man (as in hu-man) could do, was to reflect.  I think it comes from this of his quotes “The ultimate value of life depends on awareness and the power of contemplation rather than mere survival”.  I get paid for provision of ‘engineering services’ but this robs me of time for researching and reflecting on news stories like the ones on which you comment here. So I am very happy to subscribe. You are providing ‘reflection services’ and that is a noble profession in which you excel. thanks for the show!

John, haven’t you been listening to the actual podcast or done any research whatsoever into the science and facts surrounding this issue?
All the evidence supports the skeptics, there is no basis for the Alarmism which is politically motivated and not based in science.
